As AI tools become increasingly integrated into research practice, questions about their ethical use, contextual relevance, and long-term impact grow more urgent—especially in the context of international research cooperation. How can AI support, rather than override, diverse knowledge systems and power dynamics? What does responsibility look like when working across disciplines, languages, and regions?

This workshop offers a space for researchers and practitioners engaged in global cooperation projects to reflect critically and exchange perspectives on the responsible use of AI. Moving beyond technical performance, the session will explore questions of fairness, transparency, and local relevance in the use of AI for research and collaboration.

The workshop is moderated by PD Dr. Johan Rochel and Dr. Jean-Daniel Strub, specialists in AI ethics, and forms part of the annual project of the KFPE on AI in global research partnerships.

We will discuss:

  • Ethical dimensions of using AI tools in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research
  • Risks and responsibilities related to data use, source attribution, and bias
  • The role of power relations in research cooperation
  • Practical challenges and good practices from participants’ own project experiences

Format:

  • Opening Dialogue (15 min): Framing input by moderators on ethics and responsibility in AI use
  • Presentation of the Annual Project’s Hypotheses (30 min): Presentation of the working document prepared on AI and international research cooperation
  • Interactive Plenary Discussion (45 min): Exchange of experiences, concerns, and ideas for responsible and context-sensitive AI integration

The workshop is organized and moderated by PD Dr Johan Rochel and Dr Jean-Daniel Strub, specialists in AI ethics. This workshop is part of the annual project of the KFPE on AI in global research partnerships.
