Institutional settings, power dynamics and motivations in decolonizing North–South research collaborations: a scoping review
This article seeks to inform the quest to decolonize research collaborations between the North (N) and South (S) that started as early as the 1970s, given the prevailing power asymmetries that continue to hinder equitable collaboration. The article is based on a scoping literature review study that sought to interrogate the institutional settings, power dynamics and motivations employed in past and ongoing N–S research collaborations. The search strategy for the relevant literature was iterative and was implemented between May and November 2023.

For Effective, Equitable and Impactful Global Research Partnerships – Why this Guide Matters
The revised Guide for Global Research Partnerships is more than a set of principles. As outlined in the accompanying article, it brings together decades of experience and perspectives from researchers and institutions working across contexts. It addresses persistent challenges such as power imbalances and supports more equitable and effective collaboration in practice. It offers concrete orientation for those working to shape global research partnerships.

Podcast: Equity in research collaboration
Creating equity in research collaboration sounds straightforward – but it often isn’t. Whilst everyone can agree that finding ways to balance the power, resources and benefits between all partners is the right thing to do, there is often difficulty in translating aspirations for “equitable partnerships” into practical action. This can be due to complex factors such as colonial legacies and structural power imbalances in research ecosystems.
